Essay on Hearts of Darkness Post Colonialism - 850 Words
Write a critique of Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness, based on your reading about post-colonialism and discussing Conrads view of African culture as other. What would someone from Africa think about this work? Heart of Darkness starts out in London and also ends there as well. Most of the story takes place in the Congo which is now known as the Republic of the Congo. Heart of Darkness was essentially a transitional novel between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. During the nineteenth century certain concepts in the story were considered unthinkable such as cannibalism. Marlows opinion of Imperialism is altered several times based on his experiences with witnessing the lengths the Imperialists would go for profit. When Marlo w meets Kurtz he realizes that Kurtz himself has been conquered by the darkness and this changes his opinion regarding Imperialism. The roles of Kurtzs fiance and his African mistress are significant characters in the story. The Europeans dont realize that Kurtz lives a life of sin and consider him to be pure which contrasts with Marlows knowledge of his corruption. Conrad builds Kurtzs fiance up to symbolize the lack of presence of the British from the events in Africa. She is distraught about Kurtzs death and ponders what might have been, had Kurtz not died. Kurtzs mistress does not appear to be grief-stricken, but is not happy as she is the only native still standing after Marlow sounded the steamers whistle. Kurtzs fiances claimed she knew him best, but this was just an illusion as she was not aware of the sinful life he lived. The memory she has of Kurtz is a lie; since Marlow did not tell her the truth. The women in Hearts of Darkness have two sets of characteristics. In todays world, when you look around there are so many different types of people. Different races, different backgrounds, and also different stories. We live in a world of a diverse group of people. Some would think living in such a diverse world we would form a common ground and maybe unite together to be equal but that is far from true. No Im not talking about the inequality of people based off of race or background, the grouping of sex is the issue here. From the beginning of time till now, cultural practices have formed these boundaries. There has always been a separation of males and females and the way they are raised and taught even to what occupations they take on. Over time these became a set of gender boundaries. Any individual has the right to represent his or herself in court but a judge may refuse the individual that right to be his or her own counsel if the judge deems the individual lacks the capability to exercise a knowing or competent dismissal of an attorney (2004-2011). The judge may also deny an individual the right to represent his or herself if the representation is in any way disorderly of normal court proceedings (2004-2001). The right for an individaul to represent his or herself is granted only at normal court proceedings and is not available when a case is before the courts on appeal (2004-2011). If a person is granted the right to represent his or herself in court, that individual cannot later state the quality of his or her defense deprived him or her of sufficient aid to an attorney (2004-2011). The crucial components of right to an attorney is highlighted in the case of McKaskle v. Wiggins that detailed the self-represented defendants rights vis-a-vis ââ¬Å"standby counselâ⬠delegated by the trial court (2004-2011). If the defendant is representing his or herself, he or she has the power of how information is presented to the jurors (2004-2011). Even if there is an attorney on standby, the attorneyââ¬â¢s presence should in no way alter the juryââ¬â¢s assessment that the individual is representing his or herself (2004-2011). But involvement of a standby attorney in the company of the jury and despite the protest of the defendant does not infringe on the defendants constitutional rights afforded by the Sixth Amendment when the aid is in agreement with normal courtroom principles and practices that alleviates the trail judge of these responsibilites (2004-2011). Some defendants may think it is wise to represent his or herself but if the individual is not well versed in the law he or she could make major mistakes that may cause him or her to lose his or her freedom. An attorney is a delegate of citizens, an officer of the criminal justice system and the public that has an accountability to ensure justice is dispensed (1995-199). As a consultant an attorney notifies his or her client with knowledge of his or her constitutional rights and responsibilites and clarifies his or her realistic suggestions (1995-1999). As a promoter an attorney feverously emphasizes the clientââ¬â¢s point under the standards of the adversary method (1995-1999). As a delegate an attorney searches for an outcome beneficial to the client but uniform with the necessities of truthful dealings with others (1995-1999). As a mediator among clients an attorney searches to settle his or her conflicting interest (1995-1999). I have responsibilities, and an example to show to my little brother. I have to fill others expectations and for once, to stop only thinking about myself. So this year, my junior year. I am participating in clubs and doing part time in community markets. I want to thrive myself , be independent, vanish the feeling of being a burden to my parents . Cormac Mccarthys Novel The Road English Literature Essay These were the parting words of a dying fathers last breath to his beloved young son as his time on what remained of earth was slowly fading away. In Cormac McCarthys novel The Road, the father and his son are traveling towards the south in a post-apocalyptic setting with only the thought of carrying the fire within their hearts. The term carrying the fire is McCarthys way of saying that the father and son need to carry on with their journey no matter the hardships they face and to carry on the flame of what humanity was. The fire represents the love that they feel for each other and their strength thats pushing them forward to carry on with their journey to the south. The fire can also represent their hope and faith in a gruesome and decaying world. Another argument would be that fire can also be represented as the humanity that is left alive. In Cormac McCarthys novel, The Road, throughout the journey the son is portrayed as the fathers inner fire. The fathers undying love for his son is what gives him the strength to carry on with their journey and survive. The love that the father and son feel for each other is evident to the readers throughout the novel, The Road, without them having to utter the three worded sentence. This is proven through the conversation the two had during another one of their restless nights. Can I ask you something? Yes. Of course you can. What would you do if I died? If you died I would want to die too. So you can be with me? Yes. So I could be with you. Okay. (McCarthy, Pg.11). Also, the father, viewed as both the archetypal father and mother, always put his son first when it comes to food, warmth, and safety. The father disregards his health over his sons. He awoke coughing and walked out so as not to wake the child. He coughed till he could taste the blood (McCarthy, Pg.54) They had a single blanket in the pack and he got it out and covered the boy with it and he unzipped his parka and held the boy against him (McCarthy, Pg.67). Throughout the novel, readers can clearly see the father struggling with himself, wondering if he would have the strength in him to pull the trigger releasing the one remaining bullet, killing his own flesh and blood to let him die remaining innocent and unharmed/tainted from the clutches of what humanity has manifested into. Can you do it? When the time comes? When the time comes there will be no time. Now is the time. Curse God and die. What if it doesnt fire? It has to fire. What if it doesnt fire? Could you crush that beloved skull with a rock? Is there such a being within you of which you know nothing? Can there be? Hold him in your arms. Just so. The soul is quick. Pull him toward you. Kiss him. Quickly. ( ) this quote reveals the fathers powerful love for his son, wanting him to pass on painlessly; still being the good guy while he himself would suffer what the tainted world threw at him. Needless to say, the love that the father and son share is powerful. Its what guides them on the road. It gives them the strength to continue and move on even when they are at deaths doorstep. At some point, the fathers strength to survive starts to slowly seep out of him, wishing it could just be over, but the boy brings back his fathers spirit and strength. Whats the bravest thing you ever did? he spat into the road a bloody phlegm. Getting up this morning he said. Really? No. Dont listen to me. Come on, lets go. (McCarthy, Pg.272). Throughout the novel, The Road, the son is seen as the flicker of light in a dimming world, representing hope. The way he whole-heartedly believes and has faith in the good guys and acting as his fathers morals gives the father the hope and faith he needs to continue on with their journey and to carry the fire. Over and over again, despite the loneliness, despair and lack of hope, the boys goodness shines out brightly in a black and grey world, for example when the thief stole their belongings from the beach, the boy stopped his father from hurting him and begged him to leave some food and clothes for the thief. As the novel progresses, the fathers faith starts to waver concerning his situation in the post-apocalyptic world they are journeying through. The setting of The Road plays a major role in letting the father continually struggle to keep his faith in humanity and god. He questions god and openly reveals his hatred towards god and his circumstances by saying, Have you a neck by which to throttle you? Have you a heart? Damn you eternally have you a soul? Oh God. (McCarthy, Pg.11-12). In the end, however, its his son who makes him see the tiny flicker of light and that you can always carry that hope even in the most difficult of times. Through the fathers eyes, the boy is seen as a god-like figure. The way the father speaks of his son is overflowing with religious references towards god. He says, If he is not the Word of God, then God never spoke. (McCarthy, Pg.5). Another reference would be when He sat beside him and stroked his pale and tangled hair. Golden chalice, good to house a God. (McCarthy, Pg.75). the boy lets the father still have that sense of belief in god by believing that he was appointed by god to watch over him and protect him. My job is to take care of you. I was appointed to do that by God. I will kill anyone who touches you. Do you understand? (McCarthy, Pg.77). Even though the father is angry at god, because of his son, he still has bel ief in him. The fire in the novel, The Road, can be referred to as the flame of humanity that has been left alive still burning inside their hearts. It is the son that brings out that shred of humanity in his fathers heart. Throughout The Road, the boys reactions and pleading to help the people who they meet during their journey shows how the son and his father act as foils towards one another. An example would be when the man doesnt show any guilt or remorse for leaving the people locked up in the basement. He instead feels relief for successfully getting his son and himself out of there, however the boy is upset that they didnt attempt to help them, just like when his father didnt let him help the man struck by thunder or the little boy and dog he came across. Its difficult for the boy to understand how they can be the good guys when there are so many bad guys out there. He continuously asks his father whether there truly are any others like themselves, the good guys. The father is the one lea ding the boy to mature and become aware of the world they are in and to understand how life will be. The boys kind-heartedness in return is whats leading the father to give in and help other survivors instead of always being cautious of them for the boys safety for example, the old man they found on the road named Ely. Through the fathers perspective we see that humanity isnt yet wiped out on earth. We also see the goodness and innocence in the boy that makes us, the readers; believe that humanities flame is still burning. The son is described as Someone trying to feed a vulture broken in the road. when the boy offered food to the old man, Ely (McCarthy, Pg.163). This flame of humanity is but a flicker of light in a post-apocalyptic world, however it gives is and the father a sense that there is hope for humanity.

James madison and slavery Slavery was a problem that faced all Americans in the years prior to the American Civil War. Many Americans wanted to bring about an end to it but were unable to come up with a workable plan. One person to try and find an answer to the problem was himself a slave owner; he was James Madison. The institution of slavery deeply concerned James Madison, even at the start of his political career. During his career, Madison held many important political offices; he used these offices to try to bring to an end this "evil" in his society. Some criticized him for not using his power to fuller advantage, but Madison had a plan for achieving his objective. It is difficult to determine where James Madison's idea that slavery was evil and should be done away with came from, however two events, only a few years before his birth may have been a factor. In June of 1737, a court of Oyer and Terminer ordered that a slave named Peter, guilty of "murthering his said master," be hanged.1 His head was cut off and placed on a pole near a creek for all to see. There is no evidence James Madison saw the head on the pole but, he must have heard about it for the creek was renamed, Negrohead Run. In 1745, a black female slave, Eve, was burned to death for poisoning her master, Mr. Peter Montague. Thomas Chew, sheriff and great-uncle of James Madison carried out Eve's sentence. Speculation exists that Madison's father was present and related the story to his son years later. These repugnant events may not have had an effect on Madison, but the efforts of his parents were a factor. The institution of slavery as Madison grew up with it combined "the perso nal ease of the master with a life long consideration of the servant."2 In his book, A History of the Old South, Clement Eaton describes many Southerners as having a guilt complex over slavery. Historians are uncertain whether James Madison had a guilt complex but he did grow up with a respect for the slaves on his father's farm. This respect stayed with Madison his entire life. His personal servant, Paul Jennings, related years after Madison's death that, [Mr. Madison] often told the story, that one day riding home from court with old Tom Barbour (father of Governor [James] Barbour), they met a colored man who took off his hat.
